MENINGOCOCCAL DISEASE RATE RISING
The number of meningococcal disease cases continues to rise, with the total number for 1 January to 21 September 2001 now 444, with 22 deaths.
This is 100 more cases than for the same period last year. While a year round disease, cases do tend to increase during the winter and spring.
This year has been colder than last, and this is reflected in the greater number reported. The epidemic is expected to continue for another 10 years.
