A new committee has been established to focus on preventing the deaths of young New Zealanders.
The Child and Youth Mortality Committee will provide information and advice to the Ministry of Health on child and youth mortality.
New Zealand's decline in infant mortality between 1960 and the late 1990s was slowest decline in the OECD. Recent figures show better progress, but further improvement is needed.
The committee will develop strategic plans and practical steps to reduce morbidity and mortality.
