For the first time the number of senior doctors joining the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists has gone over the 2000 mark.
Executive director Ian Powell says some of the more recent growth includes GPs, "confirming we are not just a hospital-based organisation". He estimates over 50 GPs belong to ASMS which describes itself as a small player in primary care territory.
Mr Powell says the steady growth of members is directly linked to the gains and protections ASMS has achieved through collective bargaining, enforcement of conditions and strong defence of a high quality accessible public health system.
