An independent study underlines the importance and value of pharmacists' advice to patients. New Zealand Medical Journal compared advice provided by health food stores and pharmacies in relation to medical conditions.
A 21-year-old woman presented symptoms suggesting moderate to severe asthma and sought advice from 26 health food stores and 26 pharmacies. The 22 pharmacies suggested asthma as the probable cause, compared to 15 health food stores. More than 92% of pharmacy staff referred the patient to a doctor, compared to 35% of health food store staff.
