News Update for week ending 26 April 2002

NEW TREATMENT FOR ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

A new treatment for erectile dysfunction called UPRIMA is available in New Zealand and its founder will be speaking to GPs around the country.

Dr Jeremy Heaton, a top urologist and professor of urology, pharmacology and toxicology at Queen's University (Canada) founded Uprima, which has been available in New Zealand since November 2001.

Uprima is the first centrally acting therapy to be approved by the European Commission for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, which is estimated to affect more than 150 million men worldwide.

Unlike most orally administered drugs, Uprima is dissolved under the tongue, bypassing the gastrointestinal tract and entering the bloodstream quickly, usually taking effect in under 20 minutes.

Uprima is distributed in New Zealand by Abbott Laboratories.
