FUNCTIONAL FOODS

Functional foods is set become a household name, says Dr David Roberts.

The scientific and technical director of the Australian Food and Grocery Council, said at the recent Auckland Functional Foods Symposium, that many people were simply unaware of what functional foods are and the potential health benefits they offer.

Functional foods are essentially foods that good sound science has identified as being found in higher quantities in the diets of healthy individuals.

A common example is products enriched with folic acid which can be taken by women as a preventive against the development of neutral tube defect births.
