UNICHEM VOTES IN FAVOUR OF MERGER

Unichem pharmacist shareholders have voted overwhelmingly in favour of merging with the Zuellig-owned Amcal and Guardian groups.

January 1 next year is settlement date when Unichem Chemists officially acquire the brands. Soon after that date Unichem Chemists become known at Pharmalliance. Pharmalliance will include Life, Unichem, Dispensary First, Amcal and Guardian pharmacy groups.

Unichem chief executive Tim Roper said the supplier arrangements made by the Amcal and Guardian brands last month, and Unichem early this month, will be honoured for the early part of next year.

It is anticipated that eventually head office staff for all brands will be housed under one roof. However, Unichem has lease obligations in Ellerslie until 2005 and Amcal in Mt Eden, for another year.
